Do you know what a fractal is?? Basically a fractal is "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole" a property called self-similarity. The fern shown below is an example of a fractal. Basically, it means a certain image which can be split into a number of images which resemble the original. For eg. Look at each leaflet of the fern frond shown below. You'll see that each leaflet resembles the frond. Each leaflet of the leaflet resembles the main leaflet and so on until infinity (Understand?? I can't really explain it any better!!)
Now, with the help of 3D printing, in which a three dimensional object is created by layering and connecting successive cross sections of material, the guys at Platform Wertel Oberfell along with Matthias Bär have come up with this stunning masterpiece which is impossible to manufacture without 3-D printing technology.
The Fractal Table, which is inspired by the amazing mathematically astounding fractals, debuted at the Materialise.MGX exhibition in Milan earlier this year. The treelike stems grow into smaller branches until they get very dense at the top. While it may not be the easiest table for cleaning food off, it is one of the best examples of the level that modern printing has reached today!!
Below are a few more pictures of this absolutely beautiful table....
Nice huh?? Definitely beats the Black Hole Table hands down!!
