First Space Ad Aimed At Hungry Aliens!!

Every once in a while, one comes across news, so silly, that you simply have to tell everybody you know about it. This is definitely one of those pieces on news.....

In a massive six-hour PR excercise, high-power radars within the Arctic Circle broadcast an advertisement into space, supposedly for the first time in human history.

The advertisement, showcasing Doritos tortilla chips, was directed towards the Ursa Major constellation, which lies at a measly distance of 42 light years from Earth. The constellation contains many 'habitable zones' which, scientists claim, could support life, perhaps on an earth like planet.

The EISCAT European space station on Svalbard, an island in Norway broadcast the message using an array of highly sophisticated radars whichs are normally used to study the upper atmosphere.

EISCAT will receive an undisclosed donation from Doritos for the use of their facilities. "It's not big money, but it could be the thin end of the wedge to using our resources in a new way," said Prof. van Eyken of EISCAT.

"Some years in the future, the money that comes from this kind of commercial service could be used to fund pure research," says van Eyken.

The ad, entitled "tribe" will be broadcast in the UK on Sunday, 15th. You may now snicker...Go on!! And I'm sure you'll tell everyone else as well!!

The advert itself is unlikely to be decoded by extraterrestrial life,We're sending it as an MPEG file coded into 1s and 0s. It's going to look pretty random. But repeating the message in a series of regular pulses over several hours should help extraterrestrials identify the message as intelligent -- Prof. van Eyken
